Day Four

Back to Brazil Main Page

November 4

Well another day in paradise
Well today Stephen went old school.
I had my first run at shimming and splitting stone.
I am not sure , some artist are getting assistance, and yet for me they seem
to trust
me to do it myself.
Yesterdays Jack hammering has taken its toll.
But today most of the cuts went well
The first set of pictures will be my 530 am walk to the sculpting g site, to
show what my view is here.

Shower, and toilette.

Well for the most part when this is said and done, I should be in great
shape.
1/2 mile walk to the site every morning, and 12-14 hours of rock pounding.
We eat well,  morning, noon, and evening buffet, and for the most part I
think I am eating healthier than  in Canada.
Except today's mystery meat was liver....
and could not shamefully waist it or spit it out, they cleverly discussed it
as cuts of blackened beef, and when I asked they say beef...
And yup it was part of the beef...
I ate it down quietly, looking sheepish to see if anyone else flinched at the
first bite

Tthe blob thing in the pictures is a crystal formation in the stone.
Could be a bit of a problem for stability, as I am planing a cut through it.

The big cut....
Well let just say,
genius, splits 2 ways...
no actually the cuts went well.
most of the pieces split just as I planned, and two did not go as deep I
would have liked, but I will cut that part later.
These pictures show the progress of the cuts.

See we do actually work late into the night.
it was soo hot at night, I actually worked shirtless.
Never thought I would ever work like this,'
But surprisingly, the marble does not seem to throw off as much heat and debris
as granite does.
never even noticed.

I am learning so much over the past few days.
When I was splitting the stone it would sound like a big xylophone hearing each pin ring as you strike waiting for that ominous solid ping, then a creak, then that
hollow echo, letting you know the rock has given in to my will.

Also learned more old school ways of cutting stone with hammer and chisel,
and hammer on hammer.
All have their points, that can save time and energy.
Yes a lot of this will change the way I sculpt.
And open new windows of shape and design...

Well that is all for today.
Tomorrow hope to show you the wiring fiasco...
